Free rural experience tour in Sanchi community – kids love harvesting water bamboo shoots!

The Gongrong and Ankang communities in Sanchi District, New Taipei City, have been actively and successfully revitalizing their rural communities over the years. In addition to promoting eco-friendly farming, experiential activities, and DIY workshops, they also host weekend farmers' markets that sell fresh produce directly from local small-scale farmers. These initiatives allow visitors to immerse themselves in rural life, enjoy fresh flavors, and share in the joys of countryside living.

In recent years, as a way to give back to society, the communities regularly organize around 12 free rural educational experience sessions annually for schools at all levels. Led by community volunteers, these programs encourage both children and adults to step into the rural environment—barefoot in terraced paddies to harvest crops such as water bamboo shoots and radishes—connecting with the warmth and vibrancy of the land.

The Gongrong and Ankang communities in Sanchi are located near the Balian River basin. Their close geographical ties have nurtured a tripartite coexistence of production, living, and ecology across both sides of the river. A riverside bridge further connects the communities and enhances both daily life and tourism. Visitors often encounter beautiful views of terraced paddies reflected in the blue sky, while local crops and ecological settings serve as the backdrop for activities such as rural experiences and environmental education.

By leveraging eco-industrialization, the area generates diverse economic benefits through knowledge sharing, wellness, healing, and environmental education. Local elder and educator Mr. Lin Yifeng noted that actively practicing the United Nations’ “Satoyama Initiative” is a shared goal for both communities. They aim to build a Satoyama environmental management model and realize a vision of harmonious coexistence between people and nature. Not only do they regularly conduct ecological conservation awareness campaigns and develop healing resources, but the entire community works together to care for the land, paving the way for sustainable rural development.

This year, they also held a Satoyama Carnival, inviting community members and visitors to parade through the area. The event kicked off with war drum performances and featured Satoyama-themed acts along the Balian River, showcasing the strength, beauty, and cultural heritage of the residents. The carnival aimed to promote the concept of biodiversity and highlight the unique culture of the community.

Reflecting on the scenes captured that day, it was evident that community members participated enthusiastically in the Satoyama Carnival, with smiles on every face. It was deeply moving to see the love and devotion that the Gongrong and Ankang residents have for their land.

Li Wen, Director of the New Taipei City Agriculture Bureau, stated that the Sanchi Gongrong and Ankang communities—designated as New Taipei City’s Gold Medal Rural Areas—are dedicated to implementing the “Satoyama Initiative.” They not only promote their community development philosophy and explore future directions, but also give back to society through rural educational experiences. These efforts allow the public to feel the passion for caring for the land and to witness the beauty of rural life.
