Travel Center / Taipei Report
The trend of low-cost airlines has gradually spread from Europe and America across all of Asia. There are now 11 low-cost airlines operating in Taiwan. In addition to constant rumors that traditional airlines are planning to establish their own low-cost carriers, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications recently submitted a draft proposal to lower the barriers for launching low-cost airlines.
AirAsia, which has been named “World’s Best Low-Cost Airline” for four consecutive years, is facing increasingly fierce competition in the Taiwanese market. This year, it has invested nearly NT$10 million, combining advertising, public relations, social media, and television media resources to launch the “The More Likes, The Better the Deal” campaign for the first time. The discount rates for flight tickets to five major global travel destinations are now determined by the public. Since April, the campaign has accumulated over 22,000 “likes,” and it is expected to help Taiwanese consumers save significantly on their travel budgets. Additionally, anyone who shares the campaign information on Facebook has a chance to win a free round-trip ticket.

“Traveling the World on a Budget” has recently become a hot topic among young backpackers, and low-cost airlines have naturally become the top choice for travel. Recognizing the strong influence of social media among younger audiences, the airline chose Facebook as the platform for the campaign. Creatively combining the commonly used “like” and share functions, it offers discounts while also boosting the popularity of its fan page. Furthermore, the campaign timeline has been extended, with significant investment in advertising on buses, subways, newspapers, and television. It promotes five popular destinations—Melbourne, Phuket, Langkawi, Penang, and Perth—targeting young consumers who are considering traveling abroad but just need that final push to make the decision, encouraging them to invite friends to help decide the ticket prices.
So far, the five travel cities have collectively accumulated over 22,000 “likes.” Gao Geqiao, marketing manager at AirAsia, stated: “In order to let more people get to know AirAsia and choose to travel with us, we not only hold major promotions four times a year, but this year we’ve also introduced an exclusive ‘Likes Determine Discounts’ campaign in Taiwan. This increases opportunities for interaction with consumers and boosts brand visibility. We hope to become the first and only choice for Taiwanese travelers who love independent travel.”
