Hsinchu’s “Tomato United Nations” Fruit-Picking Family Tour – Sample 42 Global Tomato Flavors

In recent years, sightseeing farms and orchards have become super-popular holiday activities for families with kids. In Hsinchu’s Guanxi Township, there’s a special farm that grows as many as 42 varieties of tomatoes from around the world – truly a “Tomato United Nations.”

Peng Jinyong, once awarded the Top Ten Outstanding Farmers’ Shennong Prize, runs the “Jinyong DIY Leisure Farm” in Guanxi. Originally, he only grew bright red, sweet Japanese Momotaro tomatoes. Peng said that after customers mentioned that overly sweet tomatoes weren’t suitable for diabetics, it prompted him to introduce “less sweet” tomatoes from other countries. Unexpectedly, the low-sugar, vitamin C-rich Dutch Golden tomatoes became a huge hit, leading him to continue importing diverse tomato varieties from around the world. The farm now grows 42 unique tomato types from various regions, including rare varieties from far-flung Africa and South America. These not only amaze visitors but also offer a fun tasting experience with their distinctive flavors.

In addition to tomatoes, “Jinyong DIY Leisure Farm” grows organic vegetables and flowers such as sweet peppers, strawberries, fruit corn, and bitter melon. The public touring area spans 1 hectare and includes free ecological tours, fruit-picking experiences, fruit feasts, as well as DIY activities like tomato painting, potted plant arranging, and Hakka Lei Tea. Peng Jinyong especially recommends visiting between May and July, when Israeli fruit cucumbers and American fruit corn are in season. These can be picked and eaten fresh like fruit – pesticide-free and incredibly sweet.
