【Travel Fun】Traveling with a Cat? Meet the Popular “Nyankichi” from Kyushu!

I believe many cat-owning travelers have had similar experiences. Although we usually treat our cats as close family members, when it comes to the risks of losing them or the difficulty of caring for them in unfamiliar places, no matter how reluctant we are, we often have to leave them at home. But is traveling with a cat really such a wild idea? Recently...InKagoshima,Japan, a photographer broke this deeply rooted travel restriction by taking his beloved cat along on adventures and snapping a series of photos that are both bold and cute—that’s the internet-famous traveling cat, “Nyankichi”!

The term “norachan” (野良猫)inJapanese

means stray cat. Nyankichi’s owner once shared that he was originally a stray cat abandoned in a warehouse. One day, as the owner passed by the warehouse, he heard faint cries for help from a kitten inside and rescued the then-nearly dying Nyankichi, raising him ever since.

Unexpectedly, not only does Nyankichi look fierce in photos, but his personality is also quite unique. His owner says he patrols around the neighborhood almost every morning and evening and loves going out—he’s very outgoing.

Although Nyankichi has a stable temperament and isn’t afraid of outdoor spaces, to prevent him from getting lost, his owner always puts him in a cat harness and attaches a leash when taking him out.

Besides Nyankichi, the owner sometimes takes his “wife,” “Amarin” (the cat on the left in the photo), on longer trips as well.

Speaking of traveling with cats, the owner says the key is patience. Unlike dogs, who get excited about going out, most cats need time to adjust to unfamiliar environments, so their personalities and physical conditions must be considered—you must never force them.

Start by using treats to get the cat accustomed to wearing a harness and leash, then take them for walks in nearby parks and streets, gradually expanding the range.
