The well-known Sanxia Old Street eatery “Jiupinxiang Pig’s Blood Cake” closed at the end of May as owner Mr. Zheng retired to his hometown to be with his parents. To ensure visitors to Sanxia can once again enjoy the delicious pig’s blood cake from Jiupinxiang, current owner Chen Meiling decided to take over the business, reopening in mid-June. She stated her intention to rename it “Sanxia Pig’s Blood Cake,” hoping to establish the snack as a representative delicacy of the area.

The former owner of “Jiupinxiang,” Zheng Yongfeng, announced the closure on May 26th due to retirement and a desire to be with family in his hometown. Chen Meiling felt that pig’s blood cake is a uniquely Taiwanese delicacy, and that it was a shame for customers to no longer have access to such delicious versions. Thus, she decided to take over the business and reopened in mid-June.

Chen Meiling mentioned that the secret to “Jiupinxiang’s” deliciousness lies in their exclusive sauce. The chewy and firm texture comes from using 100% glutinous rice, paired with locally ground Taiwanese peanut powder that is both fragrant and sweet — all prepared by hand. Although it’s now under new management, Chen emphasized that both ingredients and sauce recipes remain true to the previous owner’s exclusive formula, so the taste has not changed.

Besides the original flavor, the spicy and garlic-infused variations also offer unforgettable taste experiences. She said she recently considered renaming “Jiupinxiang Pig’s Blood Cake” to “Sanxia Pig’s Blood Cake” to help associate the snack with the area. Currently, there are no plans for expansion, but she is open to helping aspiring entrepreneurs who wish to franchise the business.

“Jiupinxiang” offers pig’s blood cake in three shapes: rectangular, triangular, and boxed small pieces. Chen Meiling explained that the triangular shape originates from Sanxia’s old name “Triangle Sprout” (so called because it sits at the confluence of the Dahan River, Sanxia River, and Hengxi Creek), while the boxed small pieces are convenient for children when eating with parents.

Additionally, the specially made grass jelly tea is another signature offering. Made by simmering domestically produced Guanxi aged grass jelly for over eight hours and adding brown sugar or rock sugar, it comes in sugar-free or mildly sweet varieties — the perfect refreshing summer drink.
