Even a 3-year-old can ride it – Paris’s public bikes are super family-friendly

Cities with public bicycles are nothing new these days. But recently, the Paris government has introduced an interesting and thoughtful facility: public bikes that even 3-year-olds can ride. It’s the world’s first bike-sharing service designed specifically for children.

The city government believes the age limit for using the Vélib’ public bikes should be lowered to include 2-year-olds. And this past Wednesday (June 18), the “Children’s Vélib’” (P’tit Vélib’) was officially launched. It offers a total of four different sizes of bicycles along tree-lined paths and riverside promenades in the city.

The Mayor of Paris also stated: “Good habits should be cultivated from a young age. We hope to help children learn to use more environmentally friendly modes of transport early on.”

The original Vélib’ bikes were launched in July 2007. Currently, there are over 20,000 Vélib’ bikes available at 1,800 rental stations across Paris. This new mini version of the Vélib’ shares the same grey design as the adult bikes and can be rented in places such as the Bois de Boulogne, pedestrian zones along the Seine, Bois de Vincennes, green pathways in the 12th arrondissement, and the Canal de l’Ourcq. Prices start at 4 euros (approximately NT$160).
