Typhoon Bavi Disrupts Japan’s Transport as Heavy Rainstorm Cancels 630 Flights at Narita and Haneda Airports

Typhoon Bavi, the 18th typhoon of the year, made landfall in Japan on the 6th bringing strong winds and heavy rain. In addition to causing rivers to swell and widespread flooding, the torrential downpour also paralyzed local land and air transportation. The Shinkansen bullet train service between Tokyo and Shizuoka was temporarily suspended entirely, while Narita and Haneda airports grounded 630 flights due to severe weather conditions.

According to Japanese media reports, due to the severe weather, parts of the expressways connecting the Kanto region to Shizuoka were temporarily closed. The heavy rainfall also disrupted domestic air travel across Japan. For passenger safety,Japan Airlines canceled 191 flights departing from Haneda Airport in the morning, while All Nippon Airways canceled 261 flights. Other low-cost carriers including Jetstar Japan, Vanilla Air, and SkyMark also canceled all their flights, bringing the total number of domestic flight cancellations to 630.

For international flights, aside from EVA Air which was unaffected, China Airlines canceled one flight returning from Haneda Airport to Matsuyama Airport. Other flights returning from Tokyo and Nagoya to Taiwan were delayed. TransAsia Airways canceled all its round-trip flights to and from Tokyo for the entire day.

Currently, subway services in the capital area have resumed operations, but due to the strong winds and heavy rain, multiple disaster incidents have been reported across the Kanto region.
