万字楼是太原市具有历史价值的标志性建筑。万字楼是太原抗日战争前，民国26年春阎锡山为纪念他父亲阎子明而建的藏书馆，拟辟为“子明图书馆”，所以也叫子明图书馆，但不久太原沦陷，万字楼就被日寇挪作他用了。解放后，人民政府以这里为基础成立了太原图书馆，才算恢复了其原来用途。
