How to get to and from Kilimanjaro and other major airports, how to fly from the savannah to the islands, how to book Zanzibar ferries, and whether to choose daladalas or private transfers — this guide covers Tanzanian transport and costs in one place.

Domestic Travel: Flights, Ferries, and Road

  • Domestic small planes: Precision Air operates main routes; Coastal Aviation and Auric Air serve Serengeti airstrips and Zanzibar. Direct flights from the savannah to the islands take 1.5–2 hours. Luggage limit is 15 kg and must be in soft bags.
  • Ferries: Azam Marine fast boats between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar take about 2 hours, costing USD 35–50. Always book at official counters or the official website and double-check the boat name. Service may be suspended during rough seas.
  • Long-distance buses: Kilimanjaro Express and Dar Express connect Arusha and Dar (around 9–10 hours). Generally safe but long, and night services should be considered carefully.

Urban and Safari Transport

  • Daladalas: Local minibuses, fares TZS 400–2,000. Acceptable for the experience, but not recommended if you’re in a hurry.
  • Ride-hailing apps: Bolt is available in Dar and Zanzibar, more transparent than street taxis. Confirm the license plate before getting in.
  • Safari 4x4 vehicles: For northern circuit safaris, book a private vehicle with driver-guide for the full trip. Cost is around USD 200–350/day (including fuel, driver’s food, and lodging). Roof popping up is standard for wildlife viewing.
  • Zanzibar island transport: Cross-coast private transfers are mostly negotiable, typically TZS 30,000–60,000 one way. Renting a motorbike is risky due to road and medical care limitations.

Tips

  • Safari vehicles can be very dusty — bring a dust mask and camera protection.
  • Hot air balloon rides, helicopter tours, and other paid activities are usually paid directly at the camp, with USD cash or card accepted.
  • Arrive at least 1 hour early for ferry departures. Luggage will go through security screening and needs to be labeled.
  • Long-distance highways have speed checks and police stops — always use licensed vehicles for private transfers.
