The most compact version of Namibia’s southern cross-country route: a mid-loop from Windhoek through the desert to the coast, divided by region to cover the southwest—the area with the highest density of world-class landscapes—in one trip, covering approximately 1,400 km.
Pick up and inspect your rental car in the morning (check spare tire, jack, and puncture repair kit), then drive south for about 5 hours to reach Sesriem. If time permits, visit Sesriem Canyon (a 46-meter-deep water-carved gorge). Stay overnight at a campsite inside the park or in the village, and go to bed early to prepare for the next day.
Queue up before sunrise to enter the park and head straight for Dune 45—the ridge lines are most striking under slanting morning light. Then visit Deadvlei to see the ancient dead trees. To capture reflections, arrive before the crowds. In the afternoon, climb Big Daddy Dune or return to the village to rest. Watch the dunes turn from orange to purple at sunset on the Sunset Slope. Overnight in Sesriem.
Drive north along the C14 in the morning, passing through Gaub and Kuiseb Canyons (where the Kuiseb River forms a sandy barrier against the encroaching dunes—a great spot to stop and admire). Arrive in Solitaire for the famous apple strudel. In the afternoon, via Walvis Bay, you can opt for a 4x4 tour of Sandwich Harbour Lagoon (flamingos + the dramatic sight of dunes meeting the sea—reservation required). Arrive in Swakopmund in the evening and enjoy dinner at a German-style beer hall.
Morning choice: take a scenic flight over the Skeleton Coast to see shipwrecks and the dunes, or enjoy sandboarding, coastal cycling, and a German bakery brunch in town. In the afternoon, return to Windhoek via the B2 and B1 (about 4.5 hours), return the car, and exit the country.
