Mauritius may be small, but its attractions are spread out. For a short holiday, exploring by geographic zones is the most efficient approach: stay in Grand Baie or Black River area, and head out in a different direction each day, keeping single-direction drives under 1.5 hours.
Start your trip relaxed: Grand Baie Public Beach and Marina → Trou aux Biches Beach (renowned as the most beautiful shallow beach in the north) → Sunset at the Red Roof Church → Dinner at one of the restaurants on Grand Baie’s dining street. This day is mainly for jet lag recovery and getting used to the water temperature—long trips are not recommended.
Morning at Central Market and Drill Hall Street—try a fresh sugarcane juice and local snacks; afternoon at Fort Adelaide for views, the Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Site, and the Natural History Museum’s dodo exhibition; evening shopping and dinner at Caudan Waterfront, with night views at Simpson Bay.
Full-day car rental or self-drive: Viewpoint at Black River Gorges National Park → Chamarel’s Seven Colored Earth and waterfalls → Rum distillery tasting → Viewpoint at Le Morne to see the optical illusion of an underwater waterfall in the bay. Driving is longer this day, so start before 8 AM if possible.
Morning catamaran tour at Ile aux Cerfs, or visit Blue Bay Marine Park for a glass-bottom boat ride and snorkeling; afternoon return via the Military Museum in Mahébourg, stop by Flacq town for souvenirs, then head to the airport in the evening.
This four-day itinerary is built around car rental: negotiate full-day rates (including fuel and waiting) for the southwest and southeast days, while the two central days can be managed with walking and short taxi rides. For meals, grab snacks during the day and have one proper dinner each evening. Estimated per-person daily budget is around $115–$170. If you have more time, replace the afternoon beach time on Day 1 with a visit to the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden and the Sugar Museum to add a cultural element. On your departure day, make sure to arrive at the airport at least two hours early—the security and tax refund lines at Mauritius Airport can get quite long, so arriving early lets you enjoy a coffee by the sea while you wait.
