The best of Iran’s ancient sites are concentrated in Isfahan and Shiraz. This 4-day short trip connects the two cities by domestic flight, dedicating two days to each to avoid long overland journeys. Days 1–2 in Isfahan → Days 3–4 in Shiraz and Persepolis. The flight between the two cities takes about 1 hour, though you can also take an overnight bus to save daylight hours.
Start your morning at Imam Mosque, with its turquoise domes and colorful tiles representing the pinnacle of Safavid architecture. Next, visit the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque across the square, whose yellow and blue domes shift colors in the sunlight. In the afternoon, head to the Ali Qapu Palace viewing platform for a panorama of the square, then stroll through the double-decker bazaars on either side. In the evening, relax on the square’s lawn, watching locals picnic and chat to soak in Isfahan’s daily rhythm.
Walk along the Zayanderud River in the morning, focusing on the Si-o-se-pol Bridge and Khaju Bridge, both built during the Safavid era. The shaded arches beneath the bridges are great spots to escape the summer heat. In the afternoon, visit Vank Cathedral, an Armenian church adorned with frescoes and gold leaf, offering a striking contrast to mosque architecture. Then stroll through the Armenian quarter, sampling local coffee and sweets. Return to Si-o-se-pol Bridge in the evening for sunset photos.
Take a morning flight or private car to Shiraz, stopping first at the Persepolis ruins to see the stone reliefs of foreign dignitaries paying tribute and the grand columns of the Gate of All Nations. Then visit the rock-cut tombs of the Achaemenid kings at Naqsh-e Rustam. Arrive in Shiraz by evening, exploring Hafez’s Tomb and the Shiraz Citadel. Enjoy dinner featuring Shiraz specialties like saffron rice and grilled meats.
Head straight to the Pink Mosque in the early morning to capture the play of light through its stained-glass windows—a quintessential Shiraz scene. Continue your morning with visits to Vakil Mosque and Vakil Bazaar. In the afternoon, take a walk in Paradise Garden (Bagh-e Eram), a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its cypress trees and roses. Wrap up your evening at a teahouse in Shiraz’s old town before heading to the airport for departure.
