Starting from the capital’s peninsula and Los Islands, venture into the waterfall plateaus of Fouta Djallon, known as West Africa’s Water Tower, then follow the Niger River to the ancient city of Kankan, experiencing both natural wonders and cultural heritage.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1–2: Conakry and Los Islands → Day 3–5: Fouta Djallon Plateau → Day 6: Upper Guinea (Kankan) → Day 7: Return to Conakry. Inter-city travel is mainly by private car, with extra time allowed during the rainy season and night driving best avoided.

Day 1: Arrival in Conakry

After arriving in the capital, explore the Grand Market and seaside areas to soak in the vibrancy of a West African city. Watch the Atlantic sunset from the western tip of the peninsula in the evening, then enjoy grilled fish and peanut sauce stew for dinner.

Day 2: Los Islands

Take a boat to the nearby Los Islands, where you can stroll and swim amid sandy beaches and mangroves. This is the most popular nearby getaway from the capital. Return to the city in the evening.

Day 3: Heading to Fouta Djallon (Kindia – Labé)

Travel north by private car into the plateau, passing waterfalls and banana plantations around Kindia. Arrive in the highland town of Labé (Labé) in the afternoon, experiencing its cool climate and the Fulani market.

Day 4: Plateau Waterfalls and Canyons

Visit waterfalls such as Kinkon Falls, hike through canyons and pastoral landscapes, and learn about Fouta Djallon’s significance as the source of the Niger, Senegal, and Gambia rivers.

Day 5: Dalaba and Tea Mountains

Head to the cool highlands of Dalaba, traveling through pine forests and tea plantations, visiting local villages, and experiencing the life of plateau herders. Overnight at a highland guesthouse.

Day 6: Upper Guinea and Kankan

Travel east into the Upper Guinea Plateau and reach the ancient city of Kankan on the banks of the Niger River. Visit the old town, riverside areas, and markets to experience the historical legacy of Malinke culture.

Day 7: Return to Conakry

Return to the capital, with optional short stops in towns along the way. After arriving, pick up any additional handicraft souvenirs before flying out in the evening.

Tips

  • Medical resources are limited in highland and forest areas, so bring essential medications and travel insurance in advance.
  • Roads are prone to landslides during the rainy season, so avoid night driving and remote routes.
  • Some protected areas require advance permits and guides, which should be arranged through certified travel agencies.
