Micronesia Travel Guide: Island Hopper Flight Schedules, Intra-State Car Rentals, and Ferry Arrangements
The backbone of transportation in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is the weekly Island Hopper flights—roughly two per week. Understanding their routes, layover times, and baggage weight limits, and combining them with local taxis and car rentals, will get you halfway to a smooth trip. Includes a reference table showing how to get from each of the four state airports into town.
How to Arrive and Travel Between States
There are no direct flights from many regions. A common route is to fly into Guam or Honolulu first, then take United Airlines’ Island Hopper (Guam – Chuuk – Pohnpei – Kosrae – Majuro – Honolulu), which operates approximately twice a week. The same aircraft serves each segment, and it's possible to book individual legs. Plan your itinerary based on the flight schedule, as missing a connection could delay your trip by over two days.
Airports in the Four States and Getting Into Town
| State | Airport | Getting Into Town |
|---|
| Pohnpei | PNI | About a 10–15 minute drive to Kolonia town; hotel transfers or taxis cost around US$5–10 |
| Chuuk | TKK | Weno town is adjacent to the runway; you can walk or take a short boat ride to nearby hotels and overwater bungalows |
| Yap | YAP | About a 10-minute drive to Colonia (the capital, which shares the airport's name) |
| Kosrae | KSA | About a 15-minute drive to Tofol town area; many resorts offer complimentary pick-up |
Intra-State Transportation
- Taxis: The primary form of public transport in all four states. Taxis are not metered—fares are agreed upon at the start of the ride. Short trips typically cost around US$2–5.
- Car Rental with Guide: Scenic and historical sites are spread out. Hiring a car with a driver-guide for half a day generally costs about US$50–80 and is cost-effective for seeing the sights.
- Ferries: Trips to places like Nan Madol, outer islands, and lagoon activities often use speedboats run by local operators. Schedules depend on tidal conditions.
- Car Rental: Available in Yap and Pohnpei, with daily rates around US$50. Kosrae features a well-maintained ring road.
Tickets and Communications
- Baggage weight restrictions are strict (usually 32 kg per piece, and cabin space is limited). Fees for overweight diving equipment can be high.
- Prepaid FSM Telecom SIM cards are available at the airport. Mobile coverage is fairly reliable in urban areas but may be limited in rural locations.
- Cash is preferred: taxis, small shops, and guided tours generally do not accept card payments.
