Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 4 Days
Even a Single State Is Worth It: Focus on World Heritage Site Nan Madol, Kepirohi Waterfall, and Rainforest Hikes in Four Days—Experience Pohnpei’s Culture and Nature All in One Go, with Museum Alternatives for Rainy Days.

Itinerary Concept

This short trip focuses solely on Pohnpei State, with no cross-state travel. Pohnpei receives heavy rainfall, so every day includes a backup plan (museums or craft workshops on rainy days).

Day 1: Arrival and Kolonia

Arrive at Pohnpei International Airport → Check into a hotel in Kolonia → Explore the Spanish Wall ruins and bay views on foot or by private car → Watch the sunset from Sokehs Ridge in the evening → Try breadfruit and fish soup at a local eatery, and confirm boat schedules for the next day with your guide.

Day 2: Full Day at Nan Madol

Take a boat in the morning to the site entrance, purchase tickets, and hire a certified guide → Enter the man-made island complex via waterways, and get an up-close look at the basalt “log walls,” royal tombs, and ceremonial sites → Have a simple packed lunch provided by the boat operator → On the return trip in the afternoon, stop at a viewpoint to take in the full panorama of the ruins. The whole experience takes about 6–7 hours, and non-slip shoes are essential.

Day 3: Waterfalls and Villages

Visit Kepirohi Waterfall (a large waterfall at Black Stone Beach, where you can swim) in the morning → Head to Liduduhniap Twin Falls in the afternoon → Stop by a pepper farm along the way to learn about sakau production → In the evening, join a sakau ceremony or a family dinner to hear oral histories. The two waterfalls have very different characters—one is grand, the other serene—spend two hours at each to fully enjoy the experience.

Day 4: Mangroves and Departure

Go on a short kayaking or canoeing trip through the mangroves early in the morning (subject to tide and flight schedules) → Shop for black pepper, woven crafts, and wooden carvings as souvenirs in Kolonia → Depart from the airport.

Tips

  • The combined cost of the Nan Madol entrance fee, boat, and guide is about 50–80 USD per person. Be sure to book through official channels to support site preservation.
  • The four-day budget (excluding airfare) is approximately 500–900 USD. Staying at accommodations with two meals included can make the trip more convenient.
  • Flights from the airport often depart late at night to early morning, so plan the last day with extra time.
  • If you’re flying to Chuuk early the next morning, pack your diving certification, insurance documents, and cash separately the night before to avoid last-minute searching.
