Bayan Hushuo Grassland Tourist Area

The Bayan Hushuo Grassland Tourist Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

The Bayan Hushuo Grassland Tourist Area is located in Xinihe Town, Ewenki Autonomous Banner, Hulunbuir City, 29 kilometers from Hulunbuir. The grassland features rich historical and cultural landscapes along with striking natural scenery, making it a standout destination. As a national 3A-level tourist area, it is the primary home of the Ewenki people—one of China’s three smaller ethnic groups—and also hosts other minority communities such as the Daur, Buryat, and Oirat, all contributing to its vibrant ethnic charm.

Bayan Hushuo Grassland

The Bayan Hushuo Grassland Tourist Area has a long-standing tradition of Obo worship culture and Qing Dynasty relics. The Bayan Hushuo Obo is the largest official sacrificial Obo on the Ewenki grassland. It is the only tourist area in Inner Mongolia where the Obo was established before the development of the tourist site. The Bayan Hushuo Obo follows traditional construction methods, featuring one main Obo, twelve smaller ones, thirteen handcrafted bronze tops, as well as primitive stone altars and incense burners—showcasing ancient Obo worship customs.

The Bayan Hushuo Grassland Tourist Area hosts numerous ethnic festivals throughout the year. In early May each year, local herders celebrate the “Harvest Festival” to mark the success of spring lambing. On the 13th day of the fifth lunar month, lamas preside over the Obo worship ceremony known as the “Obo Festival.” June 18th is the unique traditional Ewenki festival “Serbin Festival,” during which the annual “International Obo Love Song Festival” is also held. At the end of December, the “Inner Mongolia Winter Nadam Fair” takes place at the foot of the Bayan Hushuo Obo. During these festivals, locals dress in their finest attire and gather from all directions around the Obo, filling the grassland with joyous celebration and a lively, grand atmosphere.

“Meeting at the Obo”

“Meeting at the Obo” is a well-known Mongolian love song that spread across China from the Bayan Hushuo Obo. In the 1950s, the Beijing Film Studio shot the first grassland-themed film, “People on the Grassland,” on the Obo mountain of Bayan Hushuo. The film’s theme song, “Meeting at the Obo,” remains widely sung to this day. To commemorate the first film shot on the Ewenki grassland and promote Obo culture, the local herders invited Mr. Marqin Fu, the original author of the film’s novel, to inscribe the stone tablet “The One and Only Obo Under Heaven.”
