Visit the Evenki Deren Tribe to experience the ancient life of the Evenki grasslands. Located deep in the grasslands, 136 kilometers from the banner seat and next to a pristine forest, the Hu River Basin is a traditional gathering area for the Evenki people, rich in distinctive folk customs and cultural heritage. The Deren Summer Camp has long been a spontaneously formed grassland settlement for the Hu River Evenki herders. When the grass turns lush and green, herders from the Hu River region drive their cattle and sheep to the fertile pastures of Deren Summer Camp, where they set up the Evenki-style willow-framed yurts and begin their annual summer grazing activities. Over 100 yurts line up in a spectacular row, with galloping horses and grazing livestock creating a scene where ancient traditions blend with modern life — a rare glimpse into the grassland's ancient, untouched way of living. At the Deren Summer Camp, you can take part in the daily lives of the herders: milk cows, collect cow dung, ride horses to herd, take a mirgan cart to visit friends, taste and make dairy products, help set up an Evenki-style yurt for accommodation, enjoy song and dance performances with the locals, and even take part in traditional Evenki competitions such as “Grabbing the Pole” and “Competing for the Silver Bowl.” You can also watch sheep-slaughtering demonstrations, horseback riding shows, and savor the authentic flavors of a whole roasted lamb feast. Additionally, you can admire the scenery of the Hu River Wetlands, a national-level nature reserve.
