Bengbeng Mountain Ten-Thousand-Mu Grassland Reserve

Many people are puzzled by this sight on the Gongbolagai Grassland: vast, lush meadows blooming with flowers, yet tightly enclosed by rows of neat concrete posts and barbed wire — this is the grassland ecological protection project known as the Ten-Thousand-Mu Grassland Reserve. To protect the grassland ecosystem, the autonomous region has implemented enclosure, relocation, seasonal grazing bans, and other conservation measures. The Ten-Thousand-Mu Grassland Reserve is a key component of our banner’s enclosure and relocation initiative. It involves fencing off ten thousand mu of grassland in each gaqa (administrative village) of the Gongbolagai Sumu (township), preventing livestock such as cattle and sheep from entering. There are over a dozen such reserves across the entire sumu, safeguarding large areas of grassland vegetation. This is also one of our banner’s projects for controlling sand sources affecting Beijing and Tianjin. In July 2001, during his inspection of the Bengbeng Mountain Ten-Thousand-Mu Grassland Reserve in our banner, the Premier personally inscribed the words: “Combating desertification brooks no delay; building a green barrier is imperative.”
