Zhou Enlai’s Former Residence (Site of His Convalescence) is a cultural relic protection unit of Shanwei City and a classic red tourism attraction.

Zhou Enlai’s Former Residence (Site of His Convalescence) is located in Huangcuoliao Village, Jinxian Town, Lufeng City.

In early October 1927, the troops from the Nanchang Uprising moved southward to Haifeng-Lufeng. Accompanied by Yang Shipeng, Secretary of the Shantou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Zhou Enlai, then a member of the Provisional Politburo of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Front Committee, along with fellow uprising army commander-in-chief Ye Ting, Commander of the 11th Army, Political Commissar Nie Rongzhen of the 11th Army, first arrived at Huidong in Lufeng. As they could not find the local Party organization, they returned to Nantang, where they made contact with Huang Xiuwen, Secretary of the Nantang District Committee of Lufeng. At the time, Zhou Enlai was ill. Yang Shipeng hired a sedan chair to carry Zhou to Huangcuoliao Village in Jinxian, where he stayed at Huang Xiuwen’s home for nearly ten days of treatment and rest, receiving meticulous care from the local Party organization and Huang Xiuwen’s family. Accompanied by Yang Shipeng and Huang Xiuwen, Zhou Enlai, Ye Ting, Nie Rongzhen, and others went to the seaside in Zhuzhu Village under cover of night, boarded a wooden boat, and left Jinxian safely, arriving in Hong Kong. After recovering from his illness in Hong Kong, Zhou Enlai went on to Shanghai.

The residence covers a construction area of approximately 150 square meters, with a protected area of 280 square meters. It was originally the home of Huang Xiuwen. In 1986, the Lufeng County People's Government rebuilt it. The site still preserves an iron trunk and an inkstone that were used by Zhou Enlai at the time.

Zhou Enlai’s Former Residence (Site of His Convalescence) was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Lufeng County by the Lufeng County People’s Government in November 1986, and was declared a cultural relic protection unit of Shanwei City by the Shanwei Municipal People’s Government in December 2004.
