Huangtangzhang Scenic Area

Huangtangzhang is located about 8 kilometers northwest of Xinan Town, Lufeng City, with an elevation of 370 meters. At its highest point, there was once an aviation navigation beacon, and from the summit, you can see the boundaries of Haifeng, Luhe, and Lufeng counties (cities). The Tianbaodong Guanyin Temple is situated on the mountainside at around 300 meters above sea level on Huangtangzhang. Surrounded by lush woods and fresh air, nearby there are also the Guanyin Temple, Sangu Nvniang Temple, Dimu Niang Temple, and Jinshi Pavilion. The mountain’s ecosystem is well-preserved, covered in vibrant greenery, and the scenery is truly breathtaking.

On the left side of the mountainside near the Guanyin Temple, there is a towering boulder with a banyan tree growing in the middle of the cliff face. The tree trunk has a diameter of about one meter, and its canopy spreads out like a giant umbrella with dense foliage. The tree roots wrap around the cliff, creating a lively and vibrant scene that amazes visitors with its legendary and tenacious vitality. The boulder and banyan tree make for a great spot to take shade and cool off. Beside the Guanyin Temple, there is a mountain spring where water gushes out continuously. Since ancient times, it has flowed year-round in all seasons—sweet, cool, and refreshing. Playing by the spring, washing your hands, or taking a sip of the water naturally brings a sense of relaxation and joy. It is said that this spring water also has the miraculous effect of regulating blood pressure, and many people specifically come here to collect water to take home and drink. Near the Guanyin Temple, there is a Jinshi Pavilion housing a wooden statue of General Golden Lion with a majestic and awe-inspiring appearance. The pavilion itself is a natural stone cave, square in shape, seemingly man-made yet not artificially excavated.

The mountain is covered with wild fruit forests such as oil oranges and mountain berries, as well as natural woodlands. The wild oil oranges and mountain berries bear little fruit and ripen slowly, but they have unique flavors and high nutritional and medicinal value. When the wild fruit trees bloom, their fragrance fills the mountains and fields; when they bear fruit, the green and golden hues of the fruits dot the valleys of the mountain ridge, giving visitors a strong sense of being immersed in nature. Among the natural woodlands is a type of small maple tree (locally called lacquer tree), a slow-growing native arbor. Its leaves are green in spring and summer, but in autumn and winter, like other maples, they turn completely red—and this lasts for several months. It isn’t until spring, when new leaves grow, that the red leaves fall and green buds emerge. In autumn and winter, the red hues of the small maple trees are interspersed throughout the wild forest, with greens and reds covering the mountains—a vivid, colorful painting accompanied by the gentle autumn breeze. Who could not be enchanted by such a sight?

The Guanyin Temple and the surrounding temple structures are said to have been built during the late Ming Dynasty by monks from Luofu Mountain who toured the area and identified Huangtangzhang as a feng shui treasure. They then guided local people in constructing the temples. The site was renovated in the third year of the Xianfeng reign during the Qing Dynasty (1853) and again in 1947. The tourist area enjoys convenient transportation, with access east to Da’an Town and north to Xintian Town in Luhe County. Visitors can drive directly to the Guanyin Temple and other attractions, and there is a parking lot available. The mountain scenery of Huangtangzhang, along with the temple architectures from the Ming and Qing dynasties, provides diverse options for leisure and eco-tourism.
