Guanyin Mountain, also known as Fozai Mountain, is located southeast of Dongzhu and Xibei villages in Qiaochong Town, on the western side of the Jiebo River Highway section, bordering Jieshi Port to the west, and surrounded by Hupi Reservoir and Xiangshui Reservoir. The main peak of Guanyin Mountain stands at an elevation of 640 meters. It earned its name because the massive rock atop the peak resembles Guanyin (the Goddess of Mercy) seated on a lotus throne, facing the sea. The mountain range features rolling peaks, rugged terrain, and a scattering of uniquely shaped boulders.

On Guanyin Mountain stands Qiyunyan Temple, which faces south with its back against the main peak of Guanyin Mountain. It is flanked by two towering peaks covered with peculiarly shaped boulders. In front of the temple, lush trees provide shade, birds sing amid fragrant flowers, and a clear spring flows continuously, offering sweet-tasting water. From the temple gate, one can gaze out at fishing boats on the South China Sea. Qiyunyan Temple was first built in the 24th year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1759), and enshrines statues of Guanyin, Sakyamuni, Tathagata, and Bodhidharma. In the 11th year of the Xianfeng reign (1851), a monk named Liejian from Yuanshan Temple at Xuanwu Mountain oversaw the temple’s renovation, naming it “Qiyunyan Temple.” The temple boasts a long history, rich cultural relics, a serene environment, a strategic location, and is surrounded by ancient tombs from the Song and Ming dynasties. It is not only a sacred Buddhist site but also served as an important revolutionary base during the anti-Japanese resistance in Lufeng.

During spring, autumn, and holidays, visitors flock to the area. To hike up the main peak of Guanyin Mountain, start from the mountain foot on the western side of the Jiebo River Highway and follow a winding stone staircase of over 2,870 steps. Towering boulders and swaying green trees line both sides of the stairs, creating enchanting scenery. Alternatively, you can drive up to the mountain top, circle around Xiangshui Reservoir along the road, then ascend from the southern side of Qiyunyan — the path winds through dramatic landscapes where jagged rocks and cascading streams appear alternately. Admire the stunning views through the car window and take in the unique beauty of coastal highlands. In August 1987, Professor Chen Chuankang, Vice President of the Geological Society of China and professor at Peking University’s Department of Geography, visited Guanyin Mountain for an on-site survey. He praised its exceptional scenery, calling it an ideal “hiking tourism destination.”

Dongzhu Village: Located at the southeastern tip of Qiaochong Town, Dongzhu Village is 10 kilometers from the town government. It borders Jieshi Town to the southeast and consists of three natural villages: Dongkeng, Zhuzhoubu, and Songzhuliao. The village committee oversees five villager groups, with a total population of 5,339. The Jiebo River Highway runs through the village, providing convenient transportation. Dongzhu Village lies in a hilly area with more mountains than arable land, so agriculture is the main industry, cultivating crops such as rice, peanuts, sesame, sweet potatoes, and radishes, while animal husbandry includes cattle and pig farming.
