Factories include those for coffee and meat processing, flour milling, textiles, tires, dairy processing, and radio assembly. The area is known for its meerschaum pipes. It is a transportation hub, with railways connecting to Tanga and Mombasa, and roads leading to Dodoma and Nairobi. It is home to Tanzania's largest Kilimanjaro International Airport. Tourism is highly developed, and nearby attractions include volcanoes and wildlife parks.
