Introduction to Attractions A historic city and port in Tanzania. It is located along the Zanzibar Channel and near the mouth of the Rufiji River. It serves as a distribution center for sisal, cotton, and copra. Formerly a major trading hub of Tanganyika and the starting point for caravan routes inland. In the 19th century, it was one of the largest slave trade markets in East Africa. The ruins of the "Slave Fort" remain. It was a stronghold of German East Africa before 1891. It declined with the rise of Dar es Salaam. It now houses a history museum.
