Introduction to the attraction – Bagamoyo Town. Bagamoyo is a historic and cultural city in Tanzania. The name "Bagamoyo" literally means "lay down the burden of hope" or "place where one’s heart is relieved." The town still preserves many historical sites: the Gereza ruins, built before the 13th century by Arabs and featuring Islamic-style architecture, are said to be the earliest Muslim church in East Africa. The Catholic Church, built in 1868, is the earliest Catholic church in East and Central Africa. In addition, there are also the castle of the German governor from the period of German rule and the prison where black slaves were held.

The modern history of Tanzania originated in Bagamoyo. It was a hub for the slave trade in East Africa. A large number of black slaves were transported overland from the interior of East Africa by Arab and Western slave traders to this place, awaiting shipment to Arab countries and the Americas. Hence, Bagamoyo is also known as the "town of broken hearts."

In the late 19th century, with the development of maritime transport, Bagamoyo’s small harbor could no longer meet the needs of larger-scale shipping. To expand maritime trade, Sultan Seyyid Majid of Zanzibar decided in 1867 to find a better port on the Tanzanian mainland. Eventually, he selected the well-situated port of Mzizima (now Dar es Salaam), located 74 kilometers from Bagamoyo, and began urban construction. With the rise of Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo became increasingly desolate.

To protect the ancient city of Bagamoyo and develop tourism, the Tanzanian government is currently working on renovating the city with the support of European countries.
