Mount Meru

Mount Meru is located about 70 kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is a stratovolcano with an elevation of 4,566 meters and can be seen from Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. It is the tenth highest mountain in Africa. Most of Mount Meru’s massif collapsed due to a volcanic eruption on its eastern side around eight thousand years ago, similar to the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington State, USA.

The last eruption of Mount Meru occurred in 1910. The presence of several cones and craters around the mountain offers a glimpse into its eruptive past. Mount Meru is the geographical centerpiece of Arusha National Park. The fertile soil on its slopes supports a wide variety of wildlife, including about 400 species of birds, monkeys, leopards, and more. At the summit, you can see a 2-meter-tall Tanzanian flag made of metal and a concrete plaque inscribed with “Socialist Peak 4562.13m.”
