Katavi National Park is Tanzania’s third-largest national park, nestled between the hills of the southwestern Rift Valley. A remote and rugged wilderness rarely visited by tourists, Katavi remains untouched and unspoiled, offering fearless visitors a glimpse of Africa as it was over a century ago.

Located on the alluvial plains south of Mount Mahali and around Lake Katavi, this park is one of the most difficult to access and attracts only the most adventurous travelers. However, those who make the journey are rewarded with an authentically pristine experience. The landscape is dominated by sprawling miombo woodlands, while small groves provide refuge for elusive species such as greater kudu, roan antelope, and sable antelope.

The best time to visit Katavi National Park is from July to October, when the lake teems with crocodiles, hippos, and flocks of pelicans. Its woodlands, shrublands, lakes, and swamps attract over 400 bird species. Leopards, lions, elephants, zebras, antelopes, puku, and topi inhabit the grassy plains and thickets. Katavi also boasts one of the largest buffalo populations in Africa, numbering around 1,600.
