Tarangire National Park is the sixth-largest protected area in Tanzania, covering an area of 2,850 square kilometers. It is long from north to south and narrow from east to west. Notable wildlife and flora include elephants, baobab trees, and African rock pythons. The park is located between Arusha city and Manyara National Park, 118 kilometers from Arusha and 8 kilometers from the main road.

The name of Tarangire National Park comes from the Tarangire River, which runs through the park and serves as the only source of water for animals during the dry season. The animal migration range in the Tarangire area spans over 20,000 square kilometers. This region is home to a wide variety of carnivores and herbivores. During the rainy season, herbivores such as zebras, wildebeests, antelopes, giraffes, and buffalos migrate to other areas for survival, and predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas follow their prey. As a result, Tarangire is very quiet and sparsely populated during the rainy season. Elephants, having no natural enemies, remain rooted here regardless of the season, making them especially numerous in Tarangire. Birds are also a major highlight in Tarangire, with around 550 different bird species residing here year-round, including bustards—the world’s heaviest flying birds—ostriches, the world’s largest birds, and a variety of brightly colored small birds.
