Dar es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania, the former capital, and the capital of Dar es Salaam Region. It is often referred to as the “economic capital of Tanzania.” The city lies along the Indian Ocean and boasts a naturally excellent harbor, home to the Port of Dar es Salaam, which serves as the main seaport for Tanzania and East African countries.

Dar es Salaam has a unique history and culture, and is one of the representative towns of Swahili culture on the Indian Ocean coast of East Africa — a blend of Bantu culture from the region and Arab, Indian, and Pakistani influences. Architecturally, it features elements of native African Bantu styles, German colonial culture, British colonial culture, national independence spirit, and Swahili culture, as well as combinations of these, such as European openness and brightness, Middle Eastern courtyards and arcades, Indian-Pakistani carved windows and doors, and hybrid glass louvers.

There are many attractions to visit in Dar es Salaam. The Askari Monument commemorates African soldiers who died during World War I, the Miniature Wildlife Sanctuary showcases various tropical tree species from East Africa, the National Museum displays fossils of the oldest known upright-walking humans, dating back 3.6 million years, and the Old Boma tells the story of Dar es Salaam’s past as the capital of Tanzania.
