Wandiebum Nature Reserve

Wandiebum Nature Reserve is located in Magaliesberg, north of Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa, covering an area of 1 square kilometer. The reserve is world-renowned primarily for a fig tree over 1,000 years old. In the local languages of South Africa, "Wandiebum" means "magic tree," or more precisely, "miracle tree."

This sacred tree grows at the foot of the Magaliesberg Mountains, standing 23 meters tall and spanning 50 meters in diameter, with 13 main trunks extending outward up to 50 meters. It continues to grow, with new "offspring trees" emerging from the base of the mother tree. Three rings of younger trees have formed around the mother tree, which is now enclosed by a fence for protection. In addition to this miraculous tree, the Wandiebum Nature Reserve also features sites dating back to the Stone Age and Iron Age. A 19th-century Boer Fort adds a cultural touch to the reserve—now a ruin, visitors can climb a path to the fort for panoramic city views. The reserve is also home to wildlife such as impalas and zebras.
