Pretoria National Zoological Garden

Pretoria National Zoological Garden, also known as Pretoria Zoo, is located on Boom Street in Pretoria. It is one of the largest zoos in the world and the largest in South Africa. Covering an area of 85 hectares, the zoo is home to over 3,500 species of animals, attracting over 600,000 visitors each year. The zoo was founded by J. W. B. Gunning and originally established in 1899 during the outbreak of the Second Boer War. It became an officially recognized national zoo in 1916.

Half of the zoo is situated on flat land, while the other half lies on a mountainside. These two areas are divided by the Apies River, which is spanned by two bridges. The zoo features a 6-kilometer-long viewing pathway. For those who prefer not to walk, golf carts are available for rent, though not all exhibits are accessible by them. The flatland and mountainside sections can be reached via cable car. There are two restaurants within the park, and picnic areas are also set up along both banks of the Apies River. Visitors can take the cable car up to the viewing platform above the island enclosure.

Pretoria National Zoological Garden houses an aquarium, reptile park, aviary, Australian section, primate area, and carnivore zone, among others. The wide variety of animals is truly a feast for the eyes. It would be a great pity to visit the capital of South Africa without stopping by this zoo.
