South African National Defence Force Memorial Wall

The South African National Defence Force Memorial Wall is located at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. It was unveiled on October 25, 2009, to honour the heroes of the South African National Defence Force who sacrificed their lives for their country between May 31, 1961, and April 27, 1994.

The memorial wall cost 650,000 rand to build, funded entirely through private donations rather than government support. However, many people, especially those from the construction and rock industries, contributed free labour and materials. To date, the names of 2,489 heroes have been engraved on the wall, and more names are added annually—those who gave their lives for national security and deserve the respect and admiration of future generations. Since 2011, a commemorative event has been held on the last Sunday of May each year at the memorial wall, making it an annual tradition that is widely cherished by citizens.
