Red Beach in Santorini is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It was formed by the deep red rocks behind the shore, which come from magnetite found in black volcanic stones. Over time, these rocks oxidized and turned red. The red volcanic rocks are structurally similar to pumice, making them relatively light in weight. As a result, only finer debris settles in areas where the waves are gentler. That’s why Red Beach hasn’t been heavily eroded by fierce sea waves, leaving the sand somewhat coarse.
