Chester Cathedral is the mother church of the Diocese of Chester in the Church of England, located in Chester, Cheshire, England. The cathedral was formerly known as St Werburgh's Abbey, dedicated to Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. Since 1541, it has been the centre for the Bishop of Chester and for pilgrimages, as well as serving as an administrative, festive, and musical hub for the city of Chester and its diocese.

Chester Cathedral is a Grade I listed building in the UK, and its heritage also includes the monastic buildings to its north. The cathedral has undergone numerous expansions since its construction, from 1093 through the 16th century. Since Roman times, it has functioned as a Christian place of worship. It showcases all the characteristics of medieval British architecture — from Norman to English Gothic styles — making it a rich and remarkable cultural heritage site. Major reconstruction of Chester Cathedral and its monastic buildings took place in the 19th century, and a freestanding bell tower was added in the 20th century.

Chester Cathedral is one of the region’s top tourist attractions. The cathedral is 108 metres long, 23 metres wide, and 24 metres high, with a tower rising 39 metres. Today, besides being used for Christian worship, it also serves as a major venue for local concerts and exhibitions, playing an important role across all Chester’s Christian communities.
