Chester Roman Amphitheatre is the largest known Roman amphitheatre site in Britain, located in the city of Chester, Cheshire, England. It is one of the most important historic sites in the UK and has been designated as a Grade I listed building. While a wooden Roman amphitheatre may have existed here previously, what now stands before visitors is a large stone-built amphitheatre, similar to those found on the European continent. Today, the northern half of the Roman amphitheatre has been excavated, but the southern half is built over by several historic structures, some of which are also listed as heritage sites; as a result, the full extent of Chester Roman Amphitheatre cannot be fully revealed.

Historical records indicate that Chester Roman Amphitheatre was built around the 1st century AD when the Chester Roman fortress was established. Initially, the amphitheatre was intended for military training, but it was later used for cockfighting, bullfighting, boxing, archery, and gladiatorial combat. The poet Oppian once wrote that the Romans inherited the Greeks’ passion for cockfighting “celebrated annually... as a solemn ceremony,” where sacred cockfights served as a reminder for people to “always emulate the cock.”

Chester Roman Amphitheatre was most actively used during the Roman occupation of Britain and has lain abandoned for over 350 years. The site was rediscovered in 1929 and underwent major excavation work as part of a heritage project between 2007 and 2009.
