The Eastgate Clock

The Eastgate Clock is located in Chester, Cheshire, England, standing at the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress built by the ancient Romans. It is one of Chester's most iconic landmarks and is often praised as the most photogenic clock in Britain after Big Ben.

Originally, next to the main gate of the Chester fortress was a wooden tower, which was later replaced in the 2nd century with a stone one, and then in the 14th century reverted back to wood. The current gate structure dates from 1768 and consists of a triple-arched stone construction with a pedestrian passageway beneath it leading into the city. In 1899, to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, the Eastgate Clock was added to this city gate. Designed by Chester architect John Douglas, the clock proudly stands atop an openwork iron tower, featuring clock faces on all four sides and an ornate iron spire rising dramatically skyward. While providing accurate timekeeping, the clock also enhances the city’s scenic charm. Both the Eastgate Clock and its surrounding gate were designated as a Grade I listed historic building in Britain on July 28, 1955, attracting numerous visitors who come specifically to see it.
