Trafalgar Square

Introduction Admiral Horatio Nelson died in the Battle of Trafalgar off the southern coast of Spain. To commemorate his achievements, this square was specially built in the late 19th century. In many ways, this square is the heart of London. It often hosts various— and —, and on New Year’s Eve, it draws tens of thousands of revelers.

Admiral Nelson stands atop a 55-meter-high column. The large bas-reliefs on the pedestal depict four of his famous naval battles. The entire pedestal is cast from the cannons of French ships—war trophies seized by the British after defeating the Spanish and French allied forces led by Napoleon. The relief on the front portrays the Battle of Trafalgar (1805). The four lions around the base are exquisitely crafted, and children especially love climbing on them to play.

The majestic National Gallery is located at the northern end of the square. Transportation: Take the subway to Charing Cross Station.
