The Sherlock Holmes created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a world-renowned detective who, along with his assistant Dr. Watson, leads readers through countless cases. In the novels, Holmes resides at 221b Baker Street. In 1990, the Sherlock Holmes Museum was established here. The interior furnishings are all based on scenes described in the novels, further enhancing the authenticity of Holmes’ former residence.

This house was originally built in 1815. Between 1860 and 1934, it was used as a rental property. In the novels, Holmes lived here from 1881 to 1902. Later, someone purchased the house, and it was not until 1990 that this perhaps one-of-a-kind museum in the world was officially established. The structure of the museum is exactly the same as described in the novels, and the meticulous furnishing makes visitors feel as if they are stepping into the scenes from the stories.

The first floor is the most important. At the front is the shared study of Holmes and Dr. Watson, and at the back is Holmes’ bedroom. There, female staff dressed in Victorian servant costumes warmly introduce the site to visitors and take photos for them. The study displays many of Holmes’ “props,” such as his deerstalker hat, magnifying glass, pipe, and gas lamp. In one corner of the study is the unforgettable “chemical laboratory” from the novels — in reality, it’s just a desk with various chemistry tools on it, and shelves nearby filled with bottles of chemicals.

The second floor was originally Dr. Watson’s bedroom, but now, together with the third floor, it is filled with wax figures of famous characters from the novels, depicting well-known scenes from different stories. These life-sized wax figures are so lifelike that at first glance, they can be mistaken for real people.

The museum also displays letters sent to Holmes from people all over the world (in their minds, he is neither fictional nor dead). Apart from greeting letters, some even ask Holmes for help solving cases. The most recent letter dates back to 1999. At the ground floor, near the exit, there is a souvenir shop offering various Holmes-related memorabilia.

In the novels, Holmes’ landlady is Mrs. Hudson. After purchasing a ticket, the receipt issued by the museum is a lodging certificate signed by Mrs. Hudson, which is quite amusing. In fact, the walls of Baker Street Underground Station are covered with mosaic tiles featuring Holmes’ profile, and as you exit the station, you can even see a detective dressed as Holmes handing out business cards. There is also a Sherlock Holmes souvenir shop opposite the museum.
