Henderson Island
Located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, Henderson Island is one of the world's few atolls with an undisturbed and well-preserved ecosystem. Its isolated environment provides valuable insights into island evolutionary dynamics and natural selection. Today, Henderson Island is renowned for its 10 endemic plant species and 4 bird species.
Henderson Island is the largest island in the Pitcairn Islands group in the Pacific Ocean and one of the most remote islands in the South Pacific, covering an area of 3,700 hectares. The island remains largely unaffected by development, primarily due to its remote location and harsh natural conditions. It is the best-preserved example of an elevated coral atoll ecosystem in the world. Compared to other coral atolls, it has experienced relatively low human disturbance, making this characteristic particularly notable. The International Biosphere Programme, the 15th Pacific Science Inter-Congress, and individual scientists have all highlighted the importance of Henderson Island.
