London Olympic Stadium

The London Olympic Stadium was to be the main venue for the 2012 Summer Olympics, located south of the Stratford Olympic Park. The planning for the stadium began in the summer of 2007, with official construction commencing on May 22, 2008, and completion on March 29, 2011. During the Games, it was to have approximately 80,000 seats.

According to the London Organising Committee, the London Olympic Stadium is “a unique 80,000-seat venue that served as the centerpiece of the 2012 Olympic Games, hosting the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and track and field events. After the Paralympics, it will be transformed into a permanent 25,000-seat stadium, becoming a new home for track and field athletes as well as a venue for other sports, community, and educational activities.” The earth excavated for the stadium’s running track was used to create a banked 25,000-seat stand around the perimeter. A lightweight, removable steel structure was installed around the stadium to provide an additional 55,000 temporary seats. The cable-supported roof over the stands provided about two-thirds of the seating capacity and was to be dismantled and reused after the 2012 Olympics.
