Wellington Arch

Wellington Arch is one of the iconic landmarks in London, England. Built in 1826, it was constructed to commemorate the Duke of Wellington's victory at the Battle of Waterloo. The sculptures on the arch stand as high as 40 feet (approximately 12.2 meters), making them the largest bronze sculptures in the UK. This famous historical structure also once served as the smallest police station in London.

Standing approximately 50 meters high, 45 meters wide, and 22 meters thick, Wellington Arch consists of three arches that form four passageways. Its retro all-stone structure is adorned with exquisite carvings. The central vault of the arch is decorated with 111 relief panels, which complement the magnificent large-scale reliefs at the four feet of the arch, giving the impression that it is not just an ancient building but also a beautifully crafted work of art.

The lintel facing Avenue de la Grande Armée features two large reliefs sculpted by Antoine Étex: "La République" (also known as "La Résistance") and "La Paix." Above these massive reliefs are six bas-reliefs depicting significant historical events from Napoleonic France: the Battle of Austerlitz, the funeral of General Marceau, the capture of Alexandria, the Battle of Jemappes, the crossing of the Arcole Bridge, and the Battle of Aboukir.
