The Globe Theatre

The Globe Theatre is located in London, England. The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599 by the Lord Chamberlain's Men, the theatrical company to which William Shakespeare belonged, and was destroyed by fire on June 29, 1613. It was rebuilt in 1614 and closed in 1642. In 1997, a modern reconstruction of the Globe Theatre was completed and named the “Shakespeare's Globe” or the “New Globe Theatre.”

The new Globe Theatre on the banks of the River Thames is about 205 meters away from the original site. Like the old theatre, the new one also features an open-air stage surrounded by three tiers of steep seating. The circular building has a roof covering the stage and seating areas. Plays are performed here every summer from May to the first week of October, while it serves as an educational space in winter. It is open to visitors year-round.

The reconstructed theatre strives for an authentic representation of the original, with modern additions including lighting (performances in Shakespeare’s time were held during the day), a sprinkler system on the roof to protect against fire damage, and sections connected to a modern lobby, visitor center, and additional backstage areas. There are 1,380 seats in total, plus 500 standing spots in the yard — half the number available in Shakespeare’s time.
