Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square (Trafalgar Square) is a famous square in Westminster, Greater London, UK, and also a tourist attraction, built in 1805. The southern end of the square is the government office district of Whitehall, which leads to the Houses of Parliament. The southwest is Admiralty Arch, and behind it is the ceremonial route The Mall that leads to Buckingham Palace. To the north of the square is the National Gallery, and nearby are also St. Martin-in-the-Fields church and the High Commissions (ambassadorial-level representative offices among Commonwealth countries) of Commonwealth nations such as Canada, South Africa, and Malaysia. In the past, streets surrounded the square on all sides, but in recent years the street on the north side has been turned into a pedestrian walkway, improving traffic flow and the environment around the square.

The most prominent landmark in Trafalgar Square is Nelson's Column at the southern end, standing 53 metres tall. This monument commemorates Admiral Horatio Nelson, a national hero of Britain in the Napoleonic Wars. The top of the column features a bronze statue of the admiral, while the base is surrounded by four massive bronze lions, and the pedestal is adorned with reliefs depicting various battles of the Napoleonic Wars. In the middle of the square are two floral-shaped fountains, and there is a set of steps at the northern end. At each of the square’s four corners stands a sculpture pedestal, with two additional ones located in front of the National Gallery. Of these four pedestals, three currently have bronze statues, including those of historical military figures, monarchs, and George Washington, the founding president of the United States. The “Fourth Plinth” in the northwest corner has remained empty and, in recent years, the London City Council has used it to display a rotating selection of contemporary sculptures.

Trafalgar Square is a central hub for local transportation, with Charing Cross Station located nearby, and buses as well as five Tube lines passing through. For centuries after its completion, people have loved to gather in the square to celebrate traditional holidays, Christmas, or political events.
