London 2012 Olympic Velodrome

The Velodrome is located in the northern part of the London Olympic Park. Construction began in 2008 and was completed in February 2011. Chris Hoy, the gold medalist in Olympic cycling, and the British national team served as advisors during the venue’s design process to ensure it provided optimal competitive conditions for athletes.

The Velodrome is the most sustainable venue in the Olympic Park, a principle reflected throughout its construction. The wooden flooring and cladding used for the cycling track are FSC-certified, and the installed ventilation system is 100% naturally powered, creating the ideal temperature for cycling competitions without the need for air conditioning. In addition, the design optimizes the use of natural light, reducing reliance on electric lighting. The cable-net roof structure not only enhances the spectator experience but also reduces the space needed for heating and ventilation.

After the Olympics, London added a road cycling circuit and a mountain biking course in the same area. Together with the Velodrome, they form the Lee Valley VeloPark, serving the local community, sports clubs, and athletes, while also laying the foundation for London’s vision as the world’s cycling capital.
