Horse Guards Parade

Horse Guards Parade is situated in the center of the UK’s political hub, Whitehall (also known as White Hall), next to Downing Street, and stands in grand contrast to Buckingham Palace across St. James’s Park. It acts as the entrance to the royal residential area and is a key site for major events in London. Every year on the Queen’s birthday, a military parade is held here to celebrate her special day.

Since the 17th century, Horse Guards Parade has been a venue for British—and other—celebrations. Today, it draws crowds of visitors daily, as the Changing of the Guard ceremony allows tourists from around the world to witness the majestic sight of uniformed horsemen atop splendid steeds. Even more excitingly, during the 2012 London Olympics, a temporary arena was set up here, with sand imported to create London’s only beach, which served as the venue for beach volleyball competitions.
