The Swiss Re Headquarters Building is located in the financial district of London, UK. It is a 180-meter-high commercial building with a glass façade, consisting of 40 floors. This building goes by quite a few names. It is situated on St. Mary Axe in the London financial district, and its street number is 30, hence it is also known as the St. Mary Axe 30 Building. Due to its unique shape, it has earned many nicknames, the most commonly used being “The Gherkin”; other names include “The Spaceship” and “The Cigar with the Mesh.”

The Swiss Re Headquarters Building was completed in December 2003 and officially opened on April 28, 2004. Initially criticized for drastically altering London’s skyline, it later won the Royal Institute of British Architects' Stirling Prize for the “most innovative design.” From top to bottom, “The Gherkin” features a completely round shape with no iconic doors or windows on the exterior façade, making it look the same from all angles and giving off an impression of disorientation, as if detached from the narrow surrounding streets and historic buildings. However, this shape follows aerodynamic principles — standing beneath the building, one will notice there is none of the strong gusty wind typically found near other skyscrapers.

Designed by Norman Foster, who adheres to environmentally friendly design principles, the building’s unique shape is intended to minimize the external surface area in order to reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. The extensive use of glass façade allows as much sunlight as possible into the interior, achieving natural lighting. The building’s excellent ventilation design also reduces the need for air conditioning.
