Jewel Tower

The Jewel Tower is located in London, England, and is one of only two medieval-era structures of Westminster Palace that have survived largely intact—the other being Westminster Hall. Historical records indicate that the tower was built around 1365–1366 as a private property of Edward III, initially constructed to house the king’s personal treasures, hence its name.

The Jewel Tower is additionally protected by a moat and was also referred to as the King’s Privy Wardrobe. It is worth noting that the Jewel Tower is not the Crown Jewels' display in the Tower of London. In the early 17th century, it served as the archive for the House of Lords; from 1869 to 1936, it primarily functioned as the testing facility for the Standards Department of the UK Board of Trade. The main structure consists of three floors and is built primarily from hard Kentish ragstone, giving it a rustic and historically rich appearance.

Situated to the right of the two parliamentary houses, the Jewel Tower lies at the heart of many of London’s major tourist attractions, just a few minutes’ walk from Westminster Abbey and Big Ben. Today, the Jewel Tower is designated as a historical site of the United Kingdom, housing a collection of exhibits from both past and present Parliaments that reflect the history of Britain and the British Parliament.
