The Fan Museum

The Fan Museum was once the world’s first museum dedicated entirely to the theme of fans, located in Greenwich in southeast London, within the Greenwich World Heritage Site. The museum officially opened to visitors in 1991 and is housed in a Grade II listed British building dating back to 1721. To enrich the site, a decorated orangery was later added in its courtyard, along with a Japanese garden featuring fan-shaped flower beds, ponds, and streams amid lush greenery — truly picturesque.

The Fan Museum houses a collection of over 4,000 fans, fan leaves, and related objects. Among them, the oldest fan dates back to the 10th century. European fans from the 18th and 19th centuries are particularly impressive, with their unique shapes and exquisite patterns having once been essential accessories for European noblewomen. Due to the delicate nature of these precious items, the museum does not display all of its collections at once but presents them through three different exhibitions per year. In addition, the museum also offers insights into the history, production process, and various styles of fans. It is the only museum in the world dedicated to showcasing the art and craftsmanship of fans, and it is beloved by visitors from all over the globe.
