Dulwich Park

Dulwich Park is a 72-acre public park located in Dulwich, Southwark, in the southern part of London, UK. It was transformed from former farmland and meadows by the Metropolitan Board of Works. The park was opened by the Earl of Rosebery in 1890, and in June 2004, with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the park was restored to its original Victorian layout.

Since 2003, cars have been prohibited in the park, with the exception of disabled drivers. Dulwich Park features a café, a boating lake, and various sports facilities. Visitors can rent a range of sit-up-and-beg bicycles to explore the park freely. Lush green lawns and tall trees are scattered throughout the park. The boating lake has walkways where people can stroll while enjoying the surrounding natural scenery, or take a boat ride to get a close-up view of ducks and mandarin ducks on the water. There are also walking and jogging paths within the park for exercise.

On December 20, 2011, a large bronze sculpture was stolen from Dulwich Park. The artwork was created by Dame Barbara Hepworth, known as “one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century,” and had been located in Dulwich Park since the 1970s. Reportedly, the sculpture was insured for £500,000 and is considered one of Hepworth’s most significant late works.
