Highgate Cemetery

Highgate Cemetery is located in the northern part of London, England, near Waterlow Park. It consists of two parts: Highgate Cemetery and West Highgate Cemetery. A total of 170,000 people are buried here across 53,000 graves. It is world-renowned for being the final resting place of many notable figures.

Highgate Cemetery has retained its original form. West Highgate Cemetery was established in 1839 and includes two Tudor-style chapels, an avenue designed in ancient Egyptian style, a gate modeled after the famous Valley of the Kings, as well as Gothic-style tombs. East Highgate Cemetery was founded in 1854. It is the burial site of Karl Marx, the great teacher of the global proletariat and founder of scientific socialism, along with his family. The cemetery also houses the graves of British physicist and chemist Michael Faraday and novelist George Eliot. Marx’s grave is listed as a Grade I listed building in the UK.

Highgate Cemetery is hailed as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. The grounds are covered with trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, which grow peacefully here, keeping company with those who rest beneath. Thanks to the abundance of trees, the site is a haven for urban birds and small animals, with foxes being the most frequent visitors.
