Barbican Centre

The Barbican Centre is a performing arts centre located in London, UK, situated within the Barbican Estate in the northern part of the City of London. It is the largest performing arts centre in Europe, opened in 1982. At that time, it was constructed at a cost of £161 million by the City of London Corporation, the governing body of the City of London and the third-largest arts funder in the UK—equivalent to over £500 million today—and is owned and managed by the Corporation.

The Barbican Centre’s main large-scale facilities include the Barbican Hall, Barbican Theatre, Pit Theatre, Barbican Art Gallery, as well as the Barbican Cinema and Barbican Library. In addition, there are three restaurants, seven conference halls, two exhibition halls, and multiple informal performance spaces.

The Barbican Theatre was originally designed as the London base for the Royal Shakespeare Company, which left the venue in 2002. Currently, the Barbican Hall serves as the home of the renowned London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra. A wide range of events such as music performances, theatre shows, film festivals, and art exhibitions are held here regularly.
